Believe it or not for myself I have become more tolerant of most facets of Christianity. Traditionsal christianity that I scorned in my youth have become more reasonable. I tend to think of the different applications as a gift, that Jesus suits so many in so many difference ways.
But, the importance of knowing the line, is seeing and recognising that there a heaps of false teachers out there. What should have been easy for us to discern (that berg was false prophet preaching false messages) was hidden because of our own ignorance of the truth. When the Bible preached clearly against sexual immorality we didn't think it meant it.
The difference is that we are sorry for crossing the line, and Berg was not. He looked at the line as a toy to play with, his to do with what he wanted, all in the name of love of course.
We all need repentance, but the major difference between 'normal' christians and someone like berg is that they herald themselves as teachers, they prey on people like we once were. Thats why Jesus spoke so harshly against them.
