I also worked in psych hospital (county) for yrs. And yes there was spooky stuff but I never saw anyone do a protection ritual on staff!
We did have one lady that got fired because she told one of the kids that Santa Claus was from Satan.
I remember one guy that was real crazy, paranoid schizophrenic, but not a dangerous one. He had been in prison before, but not for a violent crime. Some staff treated him horrible because he was so sick and talked crudely, but not trying to be crude. I was glad I was around for him one day when he was talking to me about how he got fucked in prison. Of course that sounds offensive, but he had no idea of how it sounded. Then I asked him what happened and he talked about wanting a bag of cookies and how a man in prison sodomized him (they often stole his food) and how it hurt and he bled. I am sure that did happen to him. I told him that I was really sorry that happened to him and that I was glad that he was not in prison now. The result was that on that shift I worked he was not drugged and in the "quiet room". He would act out when other staff ridiculed him and talked to him hatefully.
He showed his paranoia when he took me into his confidence and showed me the clouds and explained that the CIA was sending radio signals to him from them.
I feel for these people that are mentally ill. I thought that movie "A Beautiful Mind" was a very good film and very touching. What a torture to combat this kind of illness.
But there were some that were extremely violent and so psychotic and nothing could help them. Except to heavily drug them. I wish science had much more info. on the workings of the brain.
