There's an interesting discussion going on at Movingon about this topic, which Zerby brought up as some sort of proof that leaving the Family is a bad idea.

I think the ability to develop a loving, trusting, personal relationship with an unseen diety called Abba, Father, depends in large measure on the quality of the attachments and relationships formed with our earliest caretakers--Mom and Dad.

What happens when your earliest experience of dependent trust on a godlike figure (mom, dad, or some other singificant adult) is one of betrayal? And when those divine representatives form your impression of god through constant punishment, pain, threats, and fear? Or when adults teach childish, magical thinking in place of a mature respect for transcendent mystery? Or when the teachings of Jesus the liberator become a doctrine of enslavement?

People who grow up in abusive environments often have trouble with the concept of a loving, personal Supreme Being. I think Zerby was a little shocked to learn just how poorly the seeds of her religion have taken root. Unfortunately, she is too blinded by her own lies to connect the apparent lack of fruit among ex SGAs to the fact that she & Berg dumped toxic waste all over the soil.
