There you have it, my total ignorance about gardening. I never in my life heard about stirring up the soil. I'd be afraid to damage the roots. I'll give it a try though. I have peas in my garden right now and if that's all my garden produces I'll be happy, since they're my favorites and everything else is just a bonus.
