Yes it can be very discouraging to leave with kids in tow and little or no support and to have no marketable skills, but even though the going may be rough, because I know that it was very very rough for me for a long time, I would not trade that roughness to go back to the family!
I am really glad you have gotten out and wonder what kinds of resources you may have in your community to help you to get on your feet, and perhaps to take turns getting GED, areas of interest to study in that can be such a help. Most resources in America are not advertised and I found many of them the very hard way.
I am not sure where you live, but in my state there are organizations that help with funds for study, medical assistance, etc. I think one thing that helps after such a long time in the fam. is to get a good physical and to make sure you get rest and pamper yourselves as much as possible.
When I left the family I remember I came back to the usa with just a few clothes for myself and kids. I went into a Salvation Army facility and needed coats for my kids. I asked for help. Well, here in the usa they are pretty much goverment controlled as to how they can allot funds etc. I was desperate and when they told me that their org. only was allowed to give vouchers to elderly, and it was COLD outside that winter, and my kids did not have coats, I quoted the verse about seeing your brother in need and shutting up the bowels of your compassion...I was that desperate and needy. Well, he talked to his Sargeant or whatever and they gave us a clothes voucher. It was so humiliating to be that desperate. But there are many places to get assistance. Most have certain guidelines for what qualifies. Getting ahold of a social worker that is truly effective and interested in helping people can be a great resource for finding help. Also, Women's centers are filled with resources for not just women but for families. Many times you may check out several things before there is something actually available.
The biggest immediate help is getting on your feet. I hope the best for you all.
What State are you in? If you are in Texas, I can give you more specific info, or perhaps can do a web search for you all, for resources in your area?
I may be unreachable for awhile because I am moving (D-Day tomorrow) and will be off line for a little while.
