I feel funny about it too when you word it the way you did. But you are phrasing it backwards, for the record.
You say:
"God loves you so much that he gave his son to die for you. It's his free gift to you. Oh, and BTW, if you don't accept his free gift, you'll burn in hell for eternity."
Whereas it should actually say:
"Humanity is on its way to hell by its own choice but don't despair. There's a solution. God loves you so much that he gave his son to die for you. It's his free gift to you."
