As a matter of fact we can see that people do not do better without 'religion'. Communism is the out and out proof that contrary to your statement that people are better off without religion, Communism proved that taking God totally out of the picture created culture that killed more people then any religious wars in all history.
The cruelty and destruction of the poor and weak is without parallel.
This is what happens to cultures without God.
