What do you mean literal and at face value?
Heaven is generally described as a wonderful place with all kinds of wonderful things happening there. Hell is the opposite. The only place where Jesus is sort of describing hell is in Luke 16 where explains of the separation between both.
Beyond what is here, there is a lot of hooey in some Christians interpretations of Heaven and Hell. The passage in Luke could even suggest that raising from the dead, as Jesus would later do, will not be enough unless one also knows, believes and follows the Mosaic law.
What about those of us who don't know about it?
