I haven't read that book, but I understand that it's what is referred to as historical fiction and so it is not a reliable source as far as academia is concerned. For anyone interested in this subject, perhaps the best thing to do is to consider primary documents, i.e., original documents produced in the time period under study. I found a website that has an extensive online library of documents related to the Gnostic tradition.
The Gnostic Society Library contains a vast collection of primary documents relating to the Gnostic tradition as well as a selection of in-depth audio lectures and brief archive notes designed to orient study of the documents, their sources, and the religious tradition they represent. I have not yet examined any of those documents.
