Gnostics like the Family appeal to those who 'want' to feel special about them selves. that they have a deeper, clearer understanding of Christianity then the poor dumb Christians around them. Their ignorance or knowledge is not really an issue. As you can see from those who joined the family, it was from quite a few strata, not just the 'ignorant masses) whatever that is. just because pretend to have special knowledge doesn't make it so. (just like the Family pretends to have great revelations)
