It would have been premature for Bush to have fired Rumsfeld before the trials and investigations are completed. Even the most despised bureaucrat should not be subjected to a kangaroo court. If the evidence shows he explicitly ordered real torture, then certainly he should be fired, and prosecuted for ordering that prisoners be tortured.

The problem is, not all forms of getting intel from prisoners is classified as torture by U.S. law or even international treaties. Sure, we all instinctively know what constitutes classic forms of torture, but what about the grey areas?

Is sleep deprivation torture? What about denying a prisoner air-conditioning or heat until he cooperates? You see, it's not always so cut-and-dried.

Don't kid yourself, this Abu Ghraib prison situation is being used in a political way by some people who want to see Bush's efforts to create a democratic Iraq fail. They hope that if Bush fails in Iraq, he will lose his reelection bid.
