I really didn't take much due to the circumstances of my escape. However, around the same time I got that jacket I also was able to purchase a walkman. I was alone when I bought it and I purposely chose a model that included a radio. During my last six months in TF, from March to August 1991, I was at the HCS. Almost every evening during my free time I would walk around the grounds listening to the radio, but always kept an approved tape in the walkman in case anyone got suspicious. Whenever anyone approached me I simply hit the play button. No one ever seemed to notice the radio tuner.
I used to listen to the U.S. armed forces radio station a lot and one night this amazing song came on called "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. I realize now that the phrase "losing my religion", as used in the song, is a saying from the southern U.S. that doesn't refer to religion at all. But at the time, that's how I heard it. After hearing it the first time I couldn't wait to hear it again. It was a new hit back then and got a lot of airtime so I would listen to that song over and over. I began to interpret the lyrics personally, and soon I began to realize that I had indeed been gradually losing my religion for sometime. Am I ever glad I finally lost it all together! Thanks R.E.M.!
