I have read that the term originally came from psychic and paranormalist Ruth Montgomery, in the '70's.
She taught that human beings who were interested in taking Earth to its next evolutionary stage would (through a range of meditational excercises) become inhabited by enlightened spiritual beings called "walk-ins", who would, through them, lead the world into a "New Age".
