Even though the 21st century wouldn't begin till a year later, most of the hoopla was over the fear that things were going to fall apart as computer clocks rolled over to 2000, and that's when "millennium" began to be a media buzzword. That's what I was referring to.
I was almost sickened by some of the antics of TV ministries in the U.S. during that period. Several "proclaimed jubilee" for the year 2000. Lots of them spouted the old theory that creation would add up to a "week" of millennia (from Gen. 1 to the 2nd coming). According to their calculations, we were about to enter the "seventh" millennium (THE millennium of Rev. 20), so Jesus HAD to be coming back before the start of the 21st century.
Clearly, it didn't happen.
If you're interested in this sort of thing, Richard Kyle has a great book called "The Last Days are Here Again", which goes into great detail about how this scenario has played out again and again since the days of the early church. Another fascinating book, by Otto Friedrich, is "The End of the Word - A History". It deals with how people have behaved when they thought the world was coming to an end, covering events like the sack of Rome, the Black Plague, the Münster rebellion, the Nazi holocaust, etc.
I appreciate your comments.
