The concluding question is really the heart of the faith paradox for people who live out of a postmodern worldview, as so many of us do.
Many Buddhists (particularly the secular sort) would sidestep that question altogether by pointing out it is an unprofitable line of inquiry. There's no way to answer the question, so why ponder it at any length? Better to ask questions to which an answer is possible.
