It's widely known that for most people, Christian and those critiquing Christianity, the concept of hell is a hard one to swallow.
That's why the Seventh Day Adventists teach that hell is only a limited punishment, and then the person being punished is 'annihilated' and exists no more. There are scriptures used to argue this point of view, and it is certainly far more humane than the thought of eternal, everlasting torture. In that view, you mainly miss out on an eternity of being close to God.
