Tao-an was identified as the founder of the pen-wu or Fundamental Non-Being school. He reconciled the Taoist idea of non-being as the origin of things with the Buddhist conception of shunyata, the Void which underlies all manifestation. "Non-being is prior to the first evolution, and shunyata is the beginning of multitudinous shapes." The difference between them is the limit of time. Before any manifestation there is fundamental non-being, though as the origin and ultimate nature of all phenomena, it is indeed shunyata. One can realize shunyata by meditating on fundamental non-being.
