According to scripture Jesus knew all things that were to come to pass in His life. He would not have been surprised by His mother's request because He already knew it would come. For Jesus to say "...little did I know..." or "it never dawned on Me" or "I had no idea..." or "I didn't expect..." is not, IMO, the same Jesus of the Bible.
John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
