For me the first real waker upper was finding out that the system really wasn't all that bad, and that it wasn't full of wolves ready to devour me, then I found out that people out here are real, not phonies, and I could be a real person too, I could be me! As soon as I woke up to how important just being an individual was, then the next big wake up was the rage, the anger I felt about having been betrayed. Anger works great as a part of the waking up process. It's been exactly that, a process, and it's not over. I've had so many different things I've woken up to one right after another, but it had to start somewhere. That's the way it's been for me, I suppose it's not the same for everyone.
