Generic spirituality is problematic to me because I believe that tradition and community are an important for staying grounded. Some expressions of spirituality are trendy fads, a flash in the pan. (Think: Loving Jesus) Tradition(centering prayer, for example) puts a practice into historic perspective. Has a particular spritual approach stood the test of time? Is the practice grounded in a community? Community keeps us honest and accountable, unless of course, we build closed, totalitarian communities where authority cannot be questioned and power is manipulated to competitive advantage.
