I agree with the overall direction of this post but question that people close to the Berg circle were necessarily 'demonized'. Even Jesus when exposing the harsh, oppressive hypocritical religious leaders in Matthew 23 didn't say the Pharisees, Scribes etc. who 'devoured widow's houses' were demon-possessed. It was just the evil of the human heart he was condemning.
Some people may say that Jesus didn't mention the Pharisees were demon-possessed because it was self-evident so he didn't NEED to say it. That's a pretty weak position to argue from, IMO. The point is He didn't say it.
I think with the Bergs we're just seeing the depravity & cruelty of human beings.
