lydia, isn't 2pt2:1 referring back to false prophets in o.t.? also can't "destruction" refer to something other than eternal damnation?(1co5:5..).i would certainly agree it is a sobering warning, and bears many paralells w/ d.b.'s "reign of error", but exactly to what extent it is a direct corrolation, or proves his eternal damnation, would require more knowledge of the inner workings of the human heart, and the mind of God than i feel i have been given. this doesn't mean i think he was saved...just that i do not know, nor do i see in that passage, nor elsewhere, a directive for us to make these determinations. (please direct me to them if you feel the scriptures do teach us to do that.) HE "hath the keys of hell and death."
both calvin and luther made some horrific errors, even agreeing to the death of those w/ whom they disagreed theologically. luther's teaching on the jews not only caused many to stumble, but influenced antisemitic pograms, even hitler. was luther damned? it seems to me that false teaching exists on a continuum...only the Almighty can pronounce eternal judgment. we are taught to judge and discern in order to obey...but that is an entirely different thing.
