I was reading some book about cults a few years back. I can't remember the title. But, it talked about one of those UFO cults, where the leader named the date that the aliens were coming to earth to cart away the faithful. After all the good space cadets were gone, Earth would be destroyed.
Of course, hundreds of these people gathered on top of a hill and waited for the hour to strike. It came and went. No space ships.
Rational people would guess that this was the end of the cult, and that the leader must have been discredited.
Nope.
A few members left over it, but the majority somehow came out of it with a stronger faith. Apparently, their faith had been so strong that it saved the world. In other words, it was a test of faith, and they passed.
