People need to remember that New Orleans was a wetlands and they blocked the rivers and the lakes so they could build a city. The French Quarter was the original town, but they wanted more and they figured they could turn that marsh into land to use. But that land is still sinking, regardless. Interestingly, the French Quarter was barely touched by the rising waters. Seems to me, man tinkering around with nature is the problem here, at least in New Orleans. Sometimes I think man is too smart for his britches as they used to say - he's so smart, he's stupid.

The rest of the gulf, of course, was wiped out merely because they were so close to the ocean.
