I think you've hit on something. Berg never dared call his mother the Old Church though he called her friends "churchy." He even said he practially worshiped her at one point, didn't he? I guess he was permanently impressed with her power over him ever since the "I'll-cut-off-your-penie-onto-this-plate" incident.
