I know what you mean. I was always troubled by the story about the bears coming out of the woods and killing the children because they made fun of some prophet.
I'm waiting to find out an explanation because I don't believe this is the God that Jesus spoke about.
I read a book by a rabbi called "Why bad things happen to good people." He talked about the book of Job and gave an interpretation that really solved a lot of problems I had with that whole story.
He mentioned that it had been written so long ago and in such an ancient language that it was hard to translate. Sometimes I think that's where a lot of the problems lie - in the translation and subsequent re-translating with pastors trying to apply ancient writings to everyday lives. But that whole idea that I had that book completely wrong and the subsequent explanation made much more sense - I decided that, to me, if it doesn't make sense, I simply don't believe it. I'll wait for an explanation that makes sense and/or rings true. that's how I deal with it.
