Interesting thoughts & you might be right on it being a matter of physical proximity, at least in the case of Paul. Who knows who closely-packed or strung out the travelers were on the road? I tend to think they were fairly close to Paul & that the difference in hearing was due to spiritual sensitivity, but that's my take, based on a similar happening in the book of John. BTW, you're right about the Greek word used here. I looked it up as well.
