Sounds like maybe he is trying to make a point?:
"he said it'd be good if Christianity dropped all its doctrines & people just did good. he said all religions should be stripped of their doctrines & simply do good.
why not simpy admit he's an athiest who believes in doing good? why not start a new religion called the Do Gooders?"

Another way of looking at it is, who does it hurt and why shouldn't he call himself that if he relates "Christian" as being "Christ Like" in the way he wants to live his life?
When it comes right down to it, don't many protestants amongst themselves or Catholics vs. protestants consider each other not to be "true" Christians, or consider the other to be blasphemous based on differing doctrines?
