life itself drives me to my knees. while i am there, it seems kind of natural to ask for a little help. especially at my age.. i sometimes need a hand just to get back up!
i think the idea of "submission" is a particularly strong trigger for folks coming out of groups like the family. i don't care much for sermons on the topic, or even some songs sung in church circles. don't get me wrong, i figure if there is a creator and/or savior worth being in contact with, then he probably has a lot better grip on things than i do. it would make sense to want to try to follow any guidance he may have to offer. (pardon the "he" thing. hope you know i don't see the godhead as purely male. but i'm still way too kjv to do the he/she thing!) the odd thing is that DESPITE the logic of handing the keys over to him, i still insist on driving most of the time! thankfully, he seems far more tolerant of my immaturity than , sad to say, i have been w/ some of my own kids. he's teaching me tho.
what i have come to realize tho is that he really does want us to drive! st. augustine said "love God, and do what you will!" (i guess he never got around to reading some of those reading list letters! )
i also read another qt from martin luther:"love God and sin boldly." i am synthesizing these two theological giants w/ my own motto..."do what you will...and sin boldly!" :).
have you ever read ann lamott? if you get a chance, look for a book she wrote called "traveling mercies". not only profound, but you will also laugh your ass off.
be well.
