Lots of atheists where I live so I don't have the problem you do. But I think no matter where you live it is difficult trying to explain your cult past to people. I think everyone probably has their own approach and strategy for dealing with it, or not dealing with it, although that only works for so long. It'll always come back to bite you in the ass if you don't deal with it up front.
