someone wrote about an account of a British General in India in the 19th century who was approached by locals who were upset about a ban on their practice of widow burning and defended it as customary. The general replied that it was a British custom to hang those who burned widows, and if the natives followed their custom, the British would follow theirs immediately afterward. I thought that was pretty effective. I don't see how it's possible to tolerate this sort of intolerance and archaic barbarism.
