Afghanistan is just one of those places were religious fundamentalism is the majority opinion. In the recent telecast when they were talking about releasing the Christian convert, the majority opinion of the man on the street was to either slit his throat or pour gasoline on him and burn him.

There was only ONE Afghani who voiced a dissenting opinion, a woman politician and a Muslim, and she was absolutely gutsy beyond words. She didn't mince her words either. She denounced her own country saying, "This shows that there is no democracy in Afghanistan, there is no freedom of religion." I greatly admire that woman and compared to her, western Muslims like Cat Stephens who was raised in pluralism and democracy and knew better, are absolute cowards.

I know there must be moderate Muslims in Afghanistan other than that one woman, but she was the one who had the guts to speak out.

There are also moderate muslims in Iran. They lost the last election unfortunately, and the hardliners won, but there must be MILLIONS of moderates even in the most "radical" states. It's just a very hard day for the moderates to live in.
