I see your point here Moonshiner. While I am a Christian & do not take lightly sweeping generalizations made against Christians, what you are talking about happened in my country, Canada. I'm not sure what the parallel history is of the Indians in the USA, but I'm familiar with what happened here with residential schools, abuse & destruction of native culture. I would easily compare this to the Afghans blowing up the statues of Buddah in Afghanistan.
Like you said, the churches like the United church & Anglican SHOULD have made ammends for the wrongs & done what's right but they haven't, so the natives have gone to the courts to try to get restitution.
What I find truly amazing is that the two churches most directly implicated in the abuse are themselves in the avante garde of 'social justice' here in Canada, promoting all kinds of minority rights, political activism, etc. yet they refuse to address THE major social injustice that they themselves are implicated in.
Some of them have made some strides but mostly it's not happening. Maybe they feel their present good works will make up for lack of good works in dealing with the major sins they're guilty of. Reminds me of the Family's 'good works' around the world helping the poor but refusing to deal with the abuse of their own children.
A ludicrous exampel, the United church stole native carvings years ago & now consider them theirs & though the natives have formally requested their carvings back, the United church has refused. come again? & of course this is nothing compared to the sexual & physical abuse they've heaped on native children.
