I always liked to read the same verses from different translations, in my case even different languages. The new perspective is amazing because though they come from the same source yet sometimes they seem to be saying different things on the surface. Most of the time, after meditating on those I realize they say the same thing.
This case (Pr 11:30) keeps being to me somewhat of a stumbling block for some of the reasons you imply, that it must mean only people of the same "cast" (only Jewish back then and only Christians now). On the other hand I see a small conflict with the Jesus explanation of "neighbor" in the NT.
