No, I haven't read "Phantastes". Pope and Sharon (2 more big fans of MacDonald) have told me that that's their absolute favorite.
Not only did C.S. Lewis consider George MacDonald his mentor, he mentions him in every single book he ever wrote. Did you know that MacDonald was one of the few Christians that Mark Twain respected and interacted with? They also stayed in each others' homes when traveling.
I've read lots of his novels. I think "The Curate's Awakening" and its sequel, "The Lady's Confession" may be my favorites. They are about an Anglican curate who loses faith and comes to grip with it again, all while trying to carry out his ministry responsibilities. I related so much, I cried most of the way through. :) Some people are put off by the "preaching" that punctuates the stories, but I really like so much of what he has to say.
