Their job includes ALL in the military including atheists and agnostics. Please read and consider because I think you see an atheist as a person without a conscience or incapable of compassion, kindness, etc. and you see an army chaplain as being a person who can only draw from the bible when counseling soldiers. A psychiatrist is sometimes needed because they are medical doctors who specialize in mental imbalance and evaluating clients to determine what conditions are needing meds, then they spend 15 minutes on average, tweaking meds. If a soldier is suicidal or suffers PTSD, or they suffer from some other mental disorder they need more than just a safe, friendly person they can speak to confidentiality. It doesn't matter if they are religious or not. Likewise, a chaplain can help an atheist or agnostic as this article describes.
