If someone attempted to rob me, I hope I'd let them have whatever it is they are after. I don't believe in killing someone over property. If someone was attempting to kill me or a loved one, I would defend with a gun if I had one. I'm not against gun ownership or self-defense in principle. I am against overkill and excess, which means I support restricting access to high capacity magazine clips. The devil is always in the details, and I don't buy into all-or-nothing positions about complicated issues. The right to self-defense and gun ownership doesn't justify killing someone over a purse snatching, particularly if the thief is not armed. I believe God deals with us as individuals and wants us to weigh each situation according to our understanding of the gospel. For that reason, I don't think God cares that much about public policy on stuff like gun control, and the question Kopel asks in the title to his article is silly.
