Yes, I can hear you scream, but it sounds to me like this was a case of a public school assignment to discuss how people celebrate the holidays (or not) in their homes and this was stopped at the point of presentation becoming proselytizing. Since the child is in a multicultural setting, it would be disrespectful of others to "witness" at school and I frankly think it's abusive for parents to urge their children to proselytize whether for Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Secularism or any other belief. After all, it's a public school where John 3:16 would suggest that belief in Jesus would be necessary to escape death. I feel sorry for the child and how damaging the media attention and frivolous lawsuit will effect her in the long run. After all, homeschooling and private Christian schools are legal.
