I agree with that. Especially when she does get the right treatment and starts coming to her senses, the horror of it will definitely haunt her and be enough of a punishment, if that's what they are looking for. Being put in a mental hospital would give people a chance to treat her and find out just what went wrong and hopefully avoid future such scenarios, though I don't know if I've ever heard of anything quite like this.
