I don't think there is such a thing as a 'normal' mother. Mothers come in all shapes, sizes, temperments. You name it.
But one thing they all have in common: mothes don't kill their children unless there something very, very wrong.
Even the worst mothers out there don't kill their kids. They might abandom them. They might do all sorts of awful things, but killing them is something even the worst mother would not consider.
It's a very strange circumstance.
I believe this woman was crazy. I agree with you that she was driven over the edge.
Unfortunately, this woman is going to have to live with what she did. Can you imagine living with the guilt of haveing killed your kids? I think that she should have been convicted as insane, and sent for treatment.
The very fact that she will live with the memory of killing them will haunt her for the rest of her life, and that is probably cruel and unusual punishment in itself.
