You said "I think one needs to examine our beliefs". I couldn't agree more. This doesn't mean throwing beliefs away willy-nilly any more than they should be taken on that way. I believe this is how we learn, and in the process keep and reinforce what is good and works for us, and discard the chaff.

As most of us likely were, i was raised with spankings, tho I can hardly say they did no damage. They were bottom only, no hair pulling punching or anything that could be described as way over the top, but as part of our child raising they were used to keep tight control and obedience, and discourage individual thought and initiative. For me this was the harmful byproduct i carried long into adulthood, fear of making the wrong choice, and afraid to admit it when i had. It allowed me to slip easily from one authority figure making all the choices for me to another (the cult) and then to another (an abusive marraige).
