Unfortunately, indigenous people continue to suffer that kind of abuse from the "civilized" world. The tribes in the Amazon region have had their lands taken from them as soon as minerals or oil is discovered. Many cultures are being wiped out as modern man moves into the wilderness.
There are some good stories though. A missionary named Bruce Olsen has converted a tribe in the jungles of southern Venezuela to Christianity. Unlike so many other missionaries though, Olsen encouraged the tribe to preserve their culture. He also taught these formerly nomadic people how to raise crops and livestock and sell their products to their non-indian neighbors. Unlike other tribes that have turned to begging to survive, this tribe has grown and prospered.
