Berg always went on about how he was a skinny runt, not like his more masculine, athletic brother or other guys who attracted the girls. I think he took very hard the fact that he was not an "Alpha male," and overcompensated, straining to exercise power and gaining control through his own games and techniques.
So maybe he was like a slight chimpanzee who was way low on the hierarchy of males and decided he'd never be the top chimp so he'd to cross over to the other side of the Congo with the Bonobo hippies where he felt he could pass for a natural born bonobo and get him a harem and some status.
