I think religion is for the most part necessary cause it gives people a box of control, their morals for the most part and their security for another part. God to me is like a security blanket, there to make you feel good, but it seems to me, from my experiences, that when it comes down to it, you are mainly on your own.

If humans were able to control themselves without the bounds of their religion then there wouldn't be such a great need for religion cause they wouldn't need to have their acts dictated or judged as right and wrong, they would already know how to behave.

But societies seem to need some forms of control and for the most part it seems that it is not in human nature to always do the right thing, look how often we fail even with the bounds of religion and morals and beliefs? Some of the worst crimes are done in the name of religion. But at least it gives the general populace some guidelines to live by.
