It really points at the limitations of human beings. It is not only about religion but to other serious issues like how to fix food or the best way to get out of bed. Once we decide to believe something it is hard for us to accept that we are wrong. Some people even think that reality for a group is decided by consensus of a majority in that group. Hmmm, sounds too "familiar" now.
