My motto since leaving the Family and making my way into the world: Question Authority.

Often the "authority" I question is NOT some official leader, but what's known as conventional thinking. It makes little difference to me whether the philosophical assumptions of conventional thinking are liberal or conservative, it's important for me to question those basic assumptions and the constructions of reality that grow out them. I aggravate my liberal friends by making conservative arguments, and my conservative friends by making liberal arguments. For the most part, this keeps me from buying in to heavily to any one faction or party or power block.

There are a few areas in which I probably can be squarely pigeon-holed. I do favor civil union entitlements for gays and lesbians. That makes me a social liberal in some eyes. The way I see it, setting up social structures that support monogamous, long-term commitments among a group of people who have scandalized mainstream society with their sexual liberties is a good way to "straighten" them out. I'd say a gay civil union or marriage is a heck of a lot more conservative and morally upright lifestyle than the gay bar and bath house scene.

Well, I got a little off topic to make my point. The military thing gets me really upset and tempts me way too much to step over the line in my comments. I did go ahead and adopt a soldier this week. I have a sneaking suspicion things will get worse for the soldiers before they get better. Let's hope I'm wrong, wrong, wrong.
