I still try to devote time to learning/improving Greek and Hebrew (often in vain)...not so easy with all the interests and obligations...

Some years ago I got in a bigger bulk cheap at ebay
a Hebrew Grammar book by W.Gesenius...almost 200 years old (not that I consider it as a learning book though, rather for reference sake)...few days ago I had another glance at it (you "feel" the pages could suffer ; ) ) and to my dismay I found how much of a rationalist Gesenius was...the same is commented at the blueletterbible.com-site...

With all the tremendous language knowledge he had, he wound up as "fairly superficial" IMO...flood-accounts as myth and legends...believing in the two creation accounts etc...just some of his commentaries...another interesting one is that the rivers in the garden Eden he considers them with Josephus likely to be the Nile and Ganges...that was now really new to me : )

Anyway...if I had to decide between expertise in languages and fundamental belief...I take the latter...

It also reminds me of a good friend of mine...fluent in Hebrew...who for some reason also takes after Gesenius...made me sad...and that of a former Baptist church-member
