I'm fortunate to be in a home group with an ancient Greek/Koine scholar. When we do Bible studies, he brings along his Greek version and talks about the words being used and their meanings. Cory will also talk about the tone and style of the writing. It's awesome to have him in our group. He's working on a PhD in this stuff.
Cory has helped me a lot with getting a better handle on what he calls "Christianese," which is theological language that I sometimes find too abstract to get my head wrapped around. The word "sin," for example, in a passage from Colossians. Cory explained that the Greek word wasn't exactly "sin" but a word with a root meaning of "death." Then I understood the text, because death is a much less abstract idea to me than sin.
