I don't need the bible to avoid hurting myself. I am glad you have something that is comforting to you. It isn't my cup of java.
I will say that I have friends from a lot of different backgrounds including atheists, agnostics, buddhist, christian and pagan. Their religion or lack of religion does not upset me nor prevent me from having them as friends. It would be a different story if they felt a need to proselytize, which is probably why I don't have any Jehovah's Witness friends...
