I understand what you are saying but what is the difference between trying to discern prophecy and trying to discern eternal salvation? Both are about things that had not yet taken place. The problem is what you mentioned, there is very little indication on what it is. It seems that faith is the only answer.
Just so you have this clear, I am very well aware of my own salvation. Also that the natural man cannot receive things of the spirit, which must be discerned spiritually, which might be the answer to these questions.
In general I think there is no legalistic way to agree on these things because so many learned people have looked at them and decided to support conflicting views. I'm always marvelled by the ingenuity of human beings to come up with so many alternative explanations. It is really an ode to how wonderfully different we all are.
